Tampere Theatre Festival 2011 offers a wide range of energetic and passionate
performances
The captivating 43rd edition of Tampere Theatre Festival takes place from 1st to 7th of August. In addition to the Main Programme the festival consists of four entities: OFF Tampere fringe festival, Programme Tent, Club Festival Encorebaana and Great Nocturnal Happening.
OFF Tampere is a fringe festival for professional and amateur artists and groups. The OFF plays, performances and events bring fresh repertoire to the Festival; stand up, improvisation theatre, circus, dance, music, theatre for all ages, monologues and traditional open-air theatre.
This year French mime group Dynamine captivates the festival audience with an interactive show Postman Bidule. The performance surprises and makes one laugh with its unlimited imagination and dynamics. Butterfly catcher by Italian actor Paulo Avataneo is a surreal show with many characters. Avataneo brings together mime, music and noises, grammelot, body percussion and comic theatre.
Programme Tent serves as a club-style arena for a wide variety of performing arts. Viewers can enjoy high-quality concerts, dance, monologue and vocal performances.
Modern dance takes over the Tent with two luminous shows. Dance Theatre MD's gentle 400 Steps peeks into the passionate world of the French movies in the 50s and 60s. Party Mood by Dance theatre Minimi is a playful and joyous performance somewhere between modern dance and street theatre.
Encorebaana is a club festival which brings small-scale performances to different restaurants around Tampere. The festival is for all tastes and preferences and all the performances have free entrance.
Love Tears -concert in Tillikka-restaurant takes the audience on a journey through the world of musicals with actress-singer Hanna Kaila, pianist Jukka Nykänen and basist Tuure Koski. Why settle for less -concert is full of presence and intensity when well-known Finnish ballads by Kaj Chydenius are beautifully interpreted and accompanied by cello, flute, quitar and piano.
The Great Nocturnal Happening is across-artistic event for groups in performing arts and other cultural organizations. The event takes place the night between Thursday and Friday. Dance, music, improvisational theatre, poetry, musicals and literature performances, among others, are available all over the city.
If you feel like experiencing something extraordinary, it is worth to visit O'Haras Freehouse and see The Dark Reindeer's performance, which combines composing with illustration.
CLUBFESTIVAL ENCOREBAANA SPREADS OUT TO THE RESTAURANTS AND
BARS
The authentic atmosphere of Tampere Theatre Festival continues in restaurants located in the centre
of Tampere from Tuesday to Friday 2.-5.8.2011. Encorebaana is a club festival for all tastes and preferences, with its broad selection of venues and performances.
Huge amount of energy and punk/rock attitude is brought to the club festival by Linda Priha's dance solo performance ...of my PunkLoveRockChild. The dedicated and outstanding performer reveals her innermost on stage. Tupacircus creates an eventful and intimate atmosphere with contemporary circus, performing breakdance, capoeira, tightrope walking and improvised music. Comedians Raila Hänninen, Tommi Tuominen and Tomi Haustola perform hilarious stand-up at Ukko Nooa and Kustaa III.
This year Encorebaana's musical repertoire is broad. After Cognac brings fresh, young attitude to the festival with its beautiful compositions, inspired by pop,rock, folk and jazz. All the songs are composed and written by the band members. Another interesting upcoming artist is singersongwriter Sansa, who plays sentimental and captivating music influenced by folk, pop and trip hop.
Tampere Improvisation Theatre Snorkkeli's show is a great example of intriguing musical performance. Nothing is predictable in this concert; everything depends on the interaction between the actors and the audience.
OFF Tampere is a fringe programme for any professional and amateur artist and group who wish to perform in Tampere Theatre Festival at their own expense. The OFF plays, performances and events bring a wide, versatile and fresh repertoire to the Festival, which spreads around Tampere city and its neighbouring area.
Altogether OFF Tampere includes 136 performances and 37 productions performed by 34 groups.
You are able to enjoy OFF Tampere's passionate performances every single day of the festival 1.- 7.8.2011; stand up, improvisation theatre, circus, dance, music, theatre for all ages, monologues and traditional open-air theatre.
You can enjoy OFF Tampere's international street theatre in Laukontori and in Jugendtori. Mime performance group Dynamime (France) performs every day of the week with its act Postman Bidule - interactive mime-clown show. The show is directed by Christian Albouy. Another street performance is Paulo Avataneo's (Italy) Butterfly Catcher, which combines mime, music, sounds, comedy, grammelot and body percussion. From Tuesday to Friday people can enjoy one-personsitting/listening-experience in You Are DONKI QUEENDOM by Gnab Collective. Voice installation is performed in Old Library House, Keskustori. Circus Ruska and Jakob's circus serve
acrobatics in Tullitori, Keskustori and Old Library House. Shows Play:Time, D.A.D and Parisuhdetta ja akrobatiaa (Relationships and Acrobatics) are performed twice a day.
Also Theatre Dzampano from St. Petersburg will charm the Festival audience with a speechless performance The Bronze Horseman. The performance is an interpretation of Pushkin's classic poem, which tells about the great flood of the river Neva and the argument between the state and the people.
Dance Theatre MD's Burn auts is shown on Hällä-stage on Saturday and Sunday. Burn auts combines both modern dance and text.
The Great Nocturnal Happening takes over the city of Tampere
The Great Nocturnal Happening arrives to town on the 4th of August. Carnivalesque event welcomes all groups and individuals in performing arts, as well as other cultural organizations, to get on stage and take part in this unique happening in the heart of Tampere. Dance, music, improvisational theatre, poetry, musicals and literature performances, among others, are available all over the city. Most of the performances are free of charge.
This year the Great Nocturnal Happening gathers together an astonishing amount of performers, venues and performances. Programme includes 194 shows by 62 different performers in 49 distinct venues. Especially families and children have a lot to explore when Children's Culture Center Rulla celebrates its opening during the Nocturnal Happening. Furthermore, two popular Finnish bands Funktio and Tohtori Orff play music for children at Väinö Linna Square.
The Great Nocturnal Happening pampers dance lovers with different kinds of dance events. Various dance styles, such as belly dance, breakdance, flamenco and modern dance are performed throughout the city. Audience is warmly welcome to the Nocturnal Happening Dance, which is organized at the Siperia Square. In addition, the traditional summer salsa event accompanied by Azúcar and Fire Troupe Flamma, is held at Tallipiha.
The Great Nocturnal Happening provides treats for art fans as well. Multiple galleries offer interesting pieces of art work, such as street art or sculptures created from recycled materials.
Another opening ceremony at the Great Nocturnal Happening is Gallery Tori's opening at the venue of the city magazine Tori.
Musical performances are available across the town. Tampere Chamber Orchestra and wind instrument orchestra Harmo entertain at the park of Osmonpuisto while La Murga Drumming Troupe brings compelling rhythms to the Väinö Linna Square. Another intriguing opportunity for sporty music lovers is Pyhäjärven rannat soi!, a walk-through musical event by the beautiful lake Pyhäjärvi.

Other exceptional events are bat watching at the park of Pyynikki, star observation with Ursa Astronomical Association and a graffiti art session accompanied by DJs at the park of Sorsapuisto, just to give a few examples. The Great Nocturnal Happening also hosts two movie events, cinema club Monroe's Katukino 2011 at the cafeteria Valo and Cinemadrome 2.5 Night of Hot Love at the Arthouse Cinema Niagara.
