New Music – The Spring Collection

by: mihai-cosmaNo. 125 30 Mai 2011

Since Saturday, music goers may attend the 2011 edition of the most iportant festival of contemporary music: Săptămâna Internațională a Muzicii Noi - SIMN (The New Music Week), organized by the Romanian Composers Society.
Now at its 21st edition (!), this event was founded by late Ștefan Niculescu as a sobre, academic and elitist festival, launched immediately when 1989 political chenges permitted the re-establishing of contacts with western composers and performers.

At the beggning SIMN presented at the Athenaeum, at Radio Hall and at Cantacuzino Palace works by Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Luciano Berio, Gyorgy Ligeti, Toru Takemitsu or Anatol Vieru, Myriam Marbé, Tiberiu Olah, Ștefan Niculescu etc. Now the new edition has a different approach. With less snobbery, less white collars, less symphonies and string quartets, less  famous maestros of the past in favor of avantgarde composers, willing to express their music in a new, unconventional manner, schocking or unprecedented, “stuffed” with not only musical but attractive ingredients, ready to transform contemporary scores in a marketable product.

Same as last year, the two artistic directors Irinel Anghel&Mihaela Vosganian conceived a dynamic display of daily events, focused on show, on unseen & unheard, on a total involvment of the performers, on choosing unconventional places and surprise costumes and scenery.

A fascinating booklet invites music-lovers to the Opera House, to the Radio Hall, to the  Conservatory, Cantacuzino Palace, Mogoșoaia Palace and “Tinerimea român㔠Center, each afternoon and each evening, the entrace being free.

The posters indicate names like Irinel Anghel, Mihaela Vosganian, Violeta Dinescu, Adrian Iorgulescu, Doina Rotaru, George Balint, Dan Dediu or Dan Buciu, Felicia Donceanu, Octavian Nemescu, Nicolae Bînduș, Vasile Timiș any many other Romanian and foreign composers. Their music will be combined with choreography, costumes, video projections, puppets, acting etc., with the help of high class performers, experts in new music, including composers-performers.

Test your imagination, your tolerance and see how open-minded you are and don’t miss the New Music Week events !
