Korniss Péter – Photographs / 1967 – 2008

Although along the years the Hungarian photographer Korniss Péter frequently came back to his home town situated on the Someºul Mic river visiting family members or friends, his arrival to Cluj now has a different meaning, representing Korniss Péter’s 1st solo exhibition organized by The Art Museum Cluj 51 years after he left for Hungary.  Some of the Bannfy Palaces rooms host the works belonging to the series “Photographs / 1967 – 2008”, homage that Korniss Péter brings to Transylvania by his presentation of several Romanian and Hungarian villages around the county of Cluj (Sic, Mera) or from Maramureº, places still keeping the authentic traditions of the regions. The black and white photographs are portraits of the people, they are also presenting the important events in the village’s life and they are creating a special atmosphere, the villages being realistically and objectively presented by the photographer.

Watching the photographs from “Photographs / 1967 – 2008” the viewer can also see that, if the human being’s development and changing is rather slow, the village has enormously evolved, being a subject of the globalization visible in the way the people are dressing and in the objects they decorate their houses with.

Korniss Péter’s creations are metaphors of the author’s love, discretion and compassion for the subjects he photographed and they also show an extraordinary skill in working with the photography’s special means of expression.

The photography fans are invited to discover the Transylvanian village “captured” on film by a true Transylvanian, Pulitzer Prize winner in 2004 and collaborator of the renowned revues National Geographic and GEO.
